Biography

Jonathan Peyton is an Associate Professor and Associate Head in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of Manitoba. His academic research focuses on social and ecological impacts of megaprojects in the Canadian North, including hydroelectric projects and large-scale infrastructure developments. Peyton's work examines how failed development schemes leave lasting material and discursive effects on landscapes and people. His book, "Unbuilt Environments: Tracing Postwar Development in Northwest British Columbia" published by UBC Press in 2017, investigates the legacy of imagined and abandoned development projects in the region. His current research explores the environmental history of hydrocarbon development in the Canadian offshore Arctic, resource transitions in the prairies, and urban political ecology in Winnipeg regarding trees, rivers, and urban wildlife. Peyton is also involved in teaching courses on environmental and historical cultural geography, emphasizing themes of social justice and the socio-political impact of environmental changes.
