Biography

Jonathan Ready is a Professor in the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan, where he specializes in ancient Greek literature and culture with a strong emphasis on Homeric poetry and Greek tragedy. His research interests encompass narrative theory and folkloristic approaches to ancient texts. Ready has authored several significant works, including 'Character, Narrator, Simile in the Iliad' published by Cambridge in 2011, which presents a large-scale examination of similes employed by Homeric characters. His subsequent books, 'Homeric Simile: Comparative Perspectives: Oral Traditions in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia' (Oxford, 2018) and 'Orality, Textuality, and the Homeric Epics: An Interdisciplinary Study of Oral Texts, Dictated Texts, and Wild Texts' (Oxford, 2019), analyze modern oral poetries to recontextualize the Homeric similes. His most recent work, 'Immersion, Identification, and the Iliad' (Oxford, 2023), investigates how the experience of consuming gripping narratives can transform reader engagement with the text. Additionally, he co-edits the 'Yearbook of Ancient Greek Epic' with Christos Tsagalis. Before joining the University of Michigan in 2020, Ready taught at the University of Miami and Indiana University over a combined 16 years, contributing richly to the fields of Classical Studies and Homeric research.
