Dr. Jonathan Redfern

Biography

Professor of Petroleum Geoscience at the University of Manchester, Jonathan Redfern is also the Director of the Energy Geoscience MSc Programs and the North Africa Research Group, a consortium funded by international oil companies. He earned a BSc in Geology from Chelsea College, University of London, and completed his PhD at the University of Bristol, which focused on the sedimentology of glaciogenic Permo-Carboniferous deposits in the Canning Basin, Western Australia. With extensive experience in the oil industry, particularly with Fina and Amerada Hess, he transitioned to academia in 1998. He has held various academic positions, including at Oxford Brookes University and the University of Manchester, where he became a professor in 2006. Redfern actively supervises funded PhD students and maintains close links with the energy industry, driving research projects that span applications in basin analysis, applied clastic sedimentology, and petroleum systems analysis, particularly in North Africa and Southeast Asia. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society and serves on several editorial boards, contributing to the advancement of geological sciences through both teaching and extensive research in petroleum geoscience.
