Biography

Jonathan (Jonny) Russell joined Brown University in July 2024 as an Assistant Professor specializing in Egyptology and Assyriology. His work examines ancient Egyptian concepts of the healthy and diseased body, documented through various therapeutic incantation compendia and written papyri. He contextualizes these ideas within the socio-cultural and environmental experiences of the Nile Valley. In addition, Jonathan explores analogous notions found in cuneiform texts from contemporary Mesopotamia, investigating the culturally transmitted concepts between these two ancient civilizations. His research sits at the intersection of Egyptology, Assyriology, medical history, and anthropology. Currently, he is exploring themes of food and alcohol production in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia through the lens of ritualistic and therapeutic texts, emphasizing the role of technology in ancient healing practices. He is preparing a monograph that aims to re-examine healing concepts and philosophies, situating them within a broader medical history narrative. Jonathan studied Egyptology and Ancient History at Swansea University in Wales, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree, followed by a Research Master’s degree and a PhD in Egyptology from Leiden University in the Netherlands. Before joining Brown, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of the History of Pharmacy and Medicine at Philipps-Universität Marburg in Germany, where he fine-tuned his research on ancient therapeutics and taught various courses on the history of medicine.
