Biography

Dr. Jonathan Schneer is a Professor Emeritus and a modern British historian at the School of History and Sociology at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his BA from McGill University in 1971 and his PhD from Columbia University in 1978. He has co-edited several books and authored key works including "London 1900: Imperial Metropolis" and "Thames: England’s River". Notably, his book "The Balfour Declaration: Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict" won the 2010 National Jewish Book Award. Schneer has published articles in leading scholarly journals and has contributed to collections of essays. He is a founding member of the "Radical History Review" and served as a book review editor for seven years. His editorial contributions extend to the "Twentieth Century British History" and he is a member of the advisory board for the "London Journal". He has received fellowships from the Whiting Foundation and American Council of Learned Societies, and has been a visiting senior research fellow at St. John's College, Oxford. His recent work includes "The Lockhart Plot: Love, Betrayal, Assassination in Lenin’s Russia", published by Oxford University Press in 2020, and he is currently working on a book about the British General Strike of 1926.
