Dr. Jonathan Seymour

Biography

Jonathan Seymour is an Associate Professor at Duke University School of Law, specializing in bankruptcy law. His research primarily focuses on business and consumer bankruptcy law, with particular attention to bankruptcy procedure and governance. His recent scholarly work examines the distinct legal culture of bankruptcy courts and its effects on the processes and practices within bankruptcy cases. He is a published author, with works featured in prestigious journals such as the University of Chicago Law Review and the Illinois Law Review, as well as the Emory Journal of Bankruptcy Developments. Before joining the Duke faculty in July 2022, Seymour worked as a Senior Associate at WilmerHale in Washington, D.C., where he specialized in bankruptcy litigation and participated in merits-stage Supreme Court cases addressing various bankruptcy issues. He has also represented trade associations and financial institutions in significant bankruptcy matters and advocated for reforms in business bankruptcy law. Seymour holds a first-class degree in Law from the University of Oxford, focusing on German Law, and received his J.D. with highest honors from George Washington University Law School.
