Dr. Jonathan Stebbins

Biography

Jonathan Stebbins is a Professor Emeritus in Geological Sciences at Stanford University, with a focus on the measurement, structure, and dynamics of inorganic materials. His research aims to understand and predict thermodynamic transport properties, linking fundamental concepts to a wide range of geological and technological phenomena. Stebbins has worked extensively with students and postdoctoral fellows on disordered materials, including minerals, glassy molten silicates, oxides, and ceramics. He utilizes nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as a primary research tool, studying materials from both natural laboratories and synthesized environments. His teaching encompasses introductory and advanced courses in geochemistry, covering diverse topics such as the formation of chemical elements, phase equilibria, aqueous solution chemistry, and igneous processes.
