Biography

Professor Sweedler received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of California at Davis in 1983 and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 1989. Following this, he worked as an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University before joining the faculty at the University of Illinois in 1991. His research focuses on bioanalytical chemistry, particularly the development of new methods for assaying chemistry in nanoliter-volume samples. He is recognized for characterizing small molecules and peptides involved in cell-cell signaling across diverse systems including microbial ecologies and animal nervous systems. As the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Analytical Chemistry, he contributes significantly to the field. His investigations include a range of analytical methodologies such as microfluidic/nanofluidic sampling, capillary electrophoresis separations, and mass spectrometry. He works on scaling methods to measure lipid, metabolite, and peptide contents at unprecedented resolutions, identifying new neurochemical pathways linked to behavior, learning, and memory. Additionally, his research examines the microbial systems influencing the gut-brain axis and the networks of neurons and glia that confer behavioral properties.
