Biography

Dr. Jonathan F. Tait is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington, specializing in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. His primary research focus is on the annexin family of calcium-dependent phospholipid binding proteins and clinical molecular-genetic testing. His long-term goal is to understand the mechanisms of annexin-membrane binding to develop diagnostic and treatment methods for disorders related to thrombosis and apoptosis. Dr. Tait quantitatively characterized the interaction of annexin V with phospholipids as well as with platelets, leukocytes, and erythrocytes, demonstrating that annexin V is an excellent probe for detecting and functionally inhibiting cellular procoagulant phospholipids, particularly phosphatidylserine. He has defined the structural requirements for membrane binding and has developed methods to image apoptotic cells in vivo within clinical areas, including organ transplant rejection and cancer chemotherapy. Furthermore, he has created novel molecular-genetic clinical assays for the diagnosis and management of genetic neoplastic diseases, with analytical clinical performance evaluated in a clinical laboratory setting.
