Dr. Jonathan Thacker

Biography

Professor Jonathan W Thacker specializes in Spanish studies with a focus on the Spanish Golden Age. His research encompasses various aspects of Spanish literature, particularly prose drama by Miguel de Cervantes and elements of Golden-Age drama, including metatheatrical features, performance, and ideological content. Thacker is actively involved in projects exploring early modern Spanish drama, having collaborated with the CATCOM project at the University of Valencia and the ProLope group at Autònoma Barcelona. He leads the AHRC-funded 'Out Wings' project aimed at disseminating and encouraging performance of Spanish theatre in English translation. He has been a consultant for Golden Age theatre productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company and served as Series Editor for the Aris Phillips Hispanic Classics published by Liverpool University Press. His teaching includes Golden-Age literature, with supervision of doctoral theses concerning Cervantes's drama and performance history. Professor Thacker has published extensively, with contributions to various scholarly works and journals, reflecting his deep engagement with the study of Calderón de la Barca, Lope de Vega, and the intersection of translation and performance in bringing Spanish theatre to a wider audience.
