Biography

Jonathan Valabhji, OBE, MD, FRCP, is a Clinical Chair in Medicine at Imperial College London and an Honorary Consultant Diabetologist at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He served as the National Specialty Advisor for Multiple Long-Term Conditions at NHS England from April 2013 to September 2023 and was the National Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity at NHS England. In this role, he established significant Diabetes Obesity Programmes, which included a broad range of national work streams focusing on lifestyle interventions and technological support for self-management. Valabhji has been instrumental in the implementation of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, which has referred over 2 million people with pre-diabetes, demonstrating a notable reduction in Type 2 diabetes incidence at a population level in England. His current research interests focus on the application of real-world data to enhance population health and improve healthcare delivery across England. He has developed unique expertise in health system leadership and policy development over the last decade, with his work reflecting these themes throughout his career. Valabhji qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London in 1990 and has served as a Consultant Physician, Diabetologist, and Endocrinologist at St Mary's Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust since 2002. In 2019, he was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List for his services to diabetes and obesity care.
