Biography

Jonathan Ward joined King’s College London in 2019 as a fixed-term Lecturer in American Literature in the Culture, Media & Creative Industries department and became a permanent Lecturer in Race Diversity Studies in 2021. He has taught at various institutions including the University of East Anglia, the University of Hertfordshire, the University of Westminster, and Oxford Brookes University. His research currently focuses on a monograph tentatively titled 'What-Is-It?' which examines the racist narratives attached to Black male bodies in American visual culture, studying how these narratives function within the systems of white supremacy. His broader research interests include the somatic disciplinarity of visual and literary representations of the body, queer Black aesthetics, Afrofuturism, and the intersection with technology. He is passionate about supervising doctoral candidates working on cultural representations of bodies in relation to race, gender, and sexuality. As an educator, he teaches a range of modules specializing in cultural representations of identity, body, gender, sexuality, and race, with a focus on making education inclusive and accessible to historically marginalized voices.
