Dr. Jonathon Hare

Biography

Professor in the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, Jonathon Hare holds a BEng degree in Aerospace Engineering and a PhD in Computer Science. His primary research interests focus on learned representations of data within the field of machine learning. He specializes in enabling machines to encode and embed raw data representations—often referred to as latent spaces or embeddings—aiming to capture human notions of meaning and semantics while disentangling the underlying factors that generate data. His work intersects with deep learning and differentiable programming, emphasizing the representation of visual information, though he has also engaged with textual information across various data modalities. Significant interests include designing models inspired by biological systems, understanding emergent properties of neural networks, and discovering novel representational techniques for diverse applications, including computer vision and archaeological site detection using aerial imagery. With over 100 publications in top-tier peer-reviewed journals and conferences, he is among a select few UK academics who have successfully presented at leading conferences like NeurIPS and ICLR in the fields of neural networks, machine learning, and representation learning.
