Biography

Jong H. Yoon, MD, is a clinician-scientist focused on applying novel neuroimaging methods to discover the brain mechanisms underlying schizophrenia and stimulant abuse disorders, while developing mechanism-based treatments for these conditions. He holds a dual appointment with the Palo Alto VA and serves as the Director of the Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) Neuromodulation Clinic. As a cognitive neuroscientist, he has led several federally funded projects utilizing advanced in vivo neuroimaging methods. His work is particularly interested in investigating the impairments in the function of the basal ganglia, which give rise to cognitive information processing deficits in psychosis and schizophrenia. To address these issues, Dr. Yoon has been developing novel fMRI methods to accurately measure the functional properties of basal ganglia nuclei. Additionally, he is creating new neuroimaging approaches to index brain function and dysfunction, employing methods to measure task-evoked GABA levels in the brain using newly developed PET tracers to determine synaptic health. He received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency in adult psychiatry at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship in cognitive neuroscience and functional neuroimaging at the University of California, Berkeley.
