Biography

Jonghwan Kim is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has served in various academic roles since 2011. His research primarily focuses on understanding transcriptional and epigenetic processes that contribute to the regulation of global gene expression and cellular characteristics in stem cells, including pluripotent and trophoblast stem cells. Kim employs a range of methodologies from molecular, biochemical, genetic, genomic, to proteomic approaches. His current research topics involve determining the differentiation versus cell death decisions made by pluripotent stem cells at the single-cell level, defining density-dependent gene expression signatures, directed cell fate conversion using cell type-specific transcription factors, and identifying key transcription factors related to human trophoblast stem cell self-renewal and differentiation. Kim's work has implications for understanding pregnancy-related disorders through in vitro stem cell models.
