Jonny Steinberg is currently working on a biography of late nineteenth-century British imperialist Cecil John Rhodes. His book, 'Winnie & Nelson: Portrait of a Marriage', published in 2023, analyzes century South African history through the lens of the marriage of Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. He has won the National Book Critics Circle Award and was shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize in the UK. Steinberg is the author of seven books focused on everyday life in South Africa from late apartheid to the present. He is also the inaugural winner of the Windham-Campbell Literature Prizes and has won South Africa’s premier nonfiction prize, the Sunday Nonfiction Award, twice. Currently, he teaches two seminars at Yale University: 'Bureaucracy in Africa' and 'Archival Methods in the Social Sciences'. In 2020, he was a Visiting Professor at the African Studies program at Oxford University and also at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (Wiser) at Wits University in Johannesburg.
