Biography

Joo-Mee Lee is a violinist and academic staff member at Stanford University, where she has been part of the Department of Music since the fall of 2014. She has played a significant role as a director of the Stanford New Ensemble and teaches introductory violin courses, as well as providing individual lessons. Lee has been actively involved with the Stanford Symphony Philharmonia, overseeing the annual Concerto Competition. Prior to her tenure at Stanford, she was an artist-in-residence and violin faculty at the University of Denver and Colorado College. Her teaching experience also includes Brandeis University and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School in Boston. Lee holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University, and her doctoral dissertation focused on an analytical study of the string quartets of Bernard Rands. Throughout her career, Lee has performed with prestigious orchestras and chamber music ensembles, including the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, and has been invited to numerous music festivals. She is a founding member of the Tonos String Quartet, which won the New England Conservatory's Honor’s Quartet position, and has been an advocate for new music, giving world premieres of works by contemporary composers.
