Dr. Joo Mee Lee

Biography

Joo-Mee Lee is a Lecturer in the Department of Music at Stanford University, where she has been involved since the fall of 2014. She serves as the director of the Stanford New Ensemble and teaches courses on Introductory Violin and Professional Development in Music. Lee provides individual lessons and has closely collaborated with the Stanford Symphony Philharmonia, overseeing the annual Concerto Competition. Before her tenure at Stanford, she was an artist-in-residence violin faculty member at the University of Denver and Colorado College, and has taught at Brandeis University and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School in Boston. Lee received her Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University, supported by the Roman Totenberg Scholarship, and her dissertation focused on an analytical study of string quartets by Bernard Rands. As a young musician, she represented South Korea in the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, performing at prestigious venues such as the Berlin Philharmonie and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. A founding member of the Tonos String Quartet, she has performed at numerous concert venues and music festivals, including Aspen, Banff, and Sarasota. In addition to her performance work, she is an avid advocate for new music and has premiered works by contemporary composers such as Bernard Rands and Jennifer Higdon.
