Biography

Joo H. Kim is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at New York University. He is a core faculty member of the NYU Center for Robotics and Embodied Intelligence (CREO) and an affiliated faculty of NYU’s Center for Urban Science Progress (CUSP) and the NYU-KAIST Global Innovation Research Institute. Dr. Kim leads the Applied Dynamics Optimization Laboratory, where he focuses on dynamics, control, and optimization of mechanical systems, with a particular interest in robotic and biomechanical systems. His research emphasizes topics including the energetics of dynamic systems, legged balance, and gait stability, as well as the integration of dynamics and control with numerical optimization and machine learning. Dr. Kim's work has received sponsorship from organizations including the NSF, NASA, NYU, and various industrial collaborators. He holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa and has been with NYU since 2009. His contributions to the field have been recognized with several awards, including the 2015 Freudenstein/General Motors Young Investigator Award and the 2020 Associate Editor Award from the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design.
