Dr. Joohyun Kim

Biography

Joohyun Kim is an associate professor of transplant surgery at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in adult and pediatric liver and kidney transplantation, with expertise in complex hepatobiliary surgery and living donor liver transplantation. He trained at Seoul National University Hospital and has built a reputation as an internationally recognized leader in living donor liver transplantation, gaining extensive experience in both adult and pediatric procedures, as well as advanced vascular reconstruction and microsurgical techniques. After further training at the Hume-Lee Transplant Center at Virginia Commonwealth University, known for its long-standing and busy transplant program in the United States, he has developed significant experience in high-acuity deceased donor transplantation and multidisciplinary care. Prior to joining Yale in 2025, he spent over a decade at the Medical College of Wisconsin where he was actively engaged in adult and pediatric transplantation, living donor procedures, and held leadership roles in education for transplant services. Dr. Kim leads a translational research program aimed at organ preservation and developing novel extracorporeal liver support strategies, contributing to advancements in preclinical models for evaluating liver function and predicting organ viability. He is an author of over 60 peer-reviewed publications and holds patents related to organ preservation.
