Joost Keizer is a professor of Art History at Radboud University. His research focuses on early modern Europe, particularly the relationship between art and nature, as well as the political and critical functions of art in the context of temporality. He is currently working on a project that investigates Dutch seventeenth-century artists in relation to the significant environmental changes of their time, including the drainage of inland bodies of water and the planting of new woods and parks. Through his research, Keizer aims to reformulate the medium of painting as it became familiar to the art of Asia and the Americas. He emphasizes the importance of broadening the study of Art History to include material visual cultures and is keen on developing new methodologies that intersect with medical sciences for diagnostic purposes. Prior to his role at Radboud University, he served as Vice-Dean of Education and Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, as well as Assistant Professor at Yale University, with his research supported by various prestigious grants.
