Joost Sluijter, a Full Professor of Medical Biology at Utrecht University, received his PhD in 2004 for his research on collagen turnover in arterial disease. Following his studies, he completed postdoctoral research at Indiana University-Purdue University before returning to the University Medical Centre Utrecht in 2006. His research group focuses on stimulating cardiac regeneration through innovative approaches that improve recovery of cardiac tissue after injury. Recently, he has identified microRNAs that enhance progenitor cell transplantation by improving local cell retention. His current work involves the use of 3D-bioprinting technologies in cardiac tissue engineering, which has significantly improved methods for delivering cells to the myocardium, realizing that injected cells can exert paracrine effects. His group aims to advance the understanding of natural myocardial repair mechanisms and develop new strategies for therapies targeting chronic heart diseases and heart failure.
