Dr. Joost Vervoort

Biography

Joost Vervoort is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University, focusing on transformative imagination and environmental governance. With a PhD from Wageningen University, he specializes in navigating societal challenges related to sustainability through social-ecological systems thinking. Having worked for seven years at the Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford, he is recognized for his research in foresight, anticipatory governance, and transformation practices. Joost is involved in significant projects like NWO Vidi project 'Anticiplay', which explores the potential of gaming in future scenarios, and he also co-leads the H2020 project 'CreaTures', which emphasizes creative practices for transformation. He has successfully led high-level foresight processes across global regions and engages in critical research on anticipatory governance. Joost collaborates with various teams and leads projects that bridge academics and society, focusing on imagination and societal participation. He has also contributed to significant campaigns related to fossil fuel divestment. As an educator, he leads innovative courses in Global Sustainability Science, guiding students in collaboration with policy makers. Additionally, Joost is a singer in a black metal band that addresses societal challenges through music.
