Dr. Jörg Hörandel

Biography

Jörg R. Hörandel is an expert in astroparticle physics, focusing on the origin of cosmic rays and the highest-energy particles in the universe. His research activities encompass a wide range of topics including direct measurements of cosmic rays using atmospheric instruments and balloons for air shower measurements caused by high-energy cosmic rays interacting with the atmosphere. Hörandel plays leading roles in various air shower experiments and has dedicated significant effort to the phenomenological aspects of astroparticle physics, particularly as an expert on the 'Knee' in the energy spectrum of cosmic rays. His contributions include the development of new detection concepts in astroparticle and medical physics. Notably, his work on radio detection of air showers has been recognized with an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). At Radboud University, he serves as a professor in Astroparticle Physics and is also associated with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Additionally, he is the director of the renowned International School of Cosmic Ray Astrophysics in Erice, actively involved in educating the next generation of scientists. Hörandel has chaired the Committee for Astroparticle Physics in the Netherlands (CAN) and is a member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), where he serves as secretary for the Commission on Astroparticle Physics (C4).
