Biography

Dr. Jorge Ivan Alvarez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathobiology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on understanding the intrinsic signals within the central nervous system (CNS) that modulate immune cell functions in neurovascular niches. Alvarez's lab endeavors to delineate how immune responses, driven by signals from infections and injuries, establish a balance between immune attack and tissue repair, which is crucial for healing processes. His work also investigates the protective mechanisms that become inadequate, resulting in persistent inflammation and long-term sequelae in various conditions. The research aims to uncover the neurovascular mechanisms that underlie neuroinflammatory diseases, including multiple sclerosis and neuropsychiatric disorders, using a combination of ex-vivo, in-vitro, in-vivo, and post-mortem approaches. Dr. Alvarez received his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Universidad de los Andes in 1997 and his PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2007.
