Dr. Jorge Ruffinelli Altesor

Biography

Jorge Ruffinelli-Altesor is a renowned scholar in Iberian and Latin American cultures, considered an authority on notable Latin American authors such as Onetti, García Márquez, and Juan Rulfo. He began his academic career in Uruguay before becoming an adjunct professor at the University of Buenos Aires in the 1970s. Following his emigration to Mexico, Ruffinelli directed the Centro de Investigaciones Lingüístico-Literarias at Universidad Veracruzana for twelve years and contributed extensively to major literary journals in Latin America. In 1986, he joined Stanford University as a Full Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. His work spans over twenty published books and five hundred articles that address literary and cultural criticism, particularly focusing on Latin American cinema and literature. Ruffinelli has also been actively involved in the editorial boards of several academic journals and directed the literary journal Texto crítico in Mexico for twelve years. His current research includes a comprehensive interpretation of contemporary Spanish American prose, involving a project that analyzes the literary contributions of over fifty authors from the region, capturing the cultural and political intersections.
