Professor Dr. Jørgen Wojtaszewski

Biography

Jørgen Wojtaszewski is a Professor at the University of Copenhagen, specializing in Molecular Physiology within the August Krogh Section. With a research focus on how physical activity promotes metabolic health, he has extensively studied the role of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in exercise adaptation and insulin sensitivity. His research, which spans over 25 years, includes mechanistic studies using both healthy and diseased subjects, as well as animal models. Wojtaszewski has published over 250 original papers and has contributed significantly to leading journals in the fields of diabetes and physiology. He has held various important positions, including Senior Research Officer at the Copenhagen Muscle Research Center and Associate Professor before advancing to full professorship in 2008. He has received numerous awards, including the EFSD/NNF Precision Diabetes Medicine Award and the NNF Distinguished Investigator Award. His academic involvement extends to leadership roles in various research programs and editorial positions in respected journals. He is also active in overseeing PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, and his research group comprises a diverse team focused on molecular signaling and muscle metabolism.
