Dr. Joris Roosen

Biography

Joris Roosen is an Assistant Professor of Regional History at Maastricht University, having been appointed in October 2023. He also serves as head of research and vice-director at the Tracé - Limburgs Samenlevingsarchief. Roosen holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in history from the University of Ghent and earned his PhD in Economic History from the University of Utrecht. His dissertation focused on the demographic and economic consequences of the mid-14th century Black Death. Prior to his current role, he was a research coordinator at the Foundation Auditing Research at Nyenrode Business University. His research primarily centres around the socio-economic history of Limburg and the surrounding regions, with a particular interest in the environmental stewardship of the Meuse river. He is the lead researcher for the Limburg Letterhead project, which examines historical documentation from the region.
