Biography

Jorke Kamstra is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University, leading the endocrine toxicology team within the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. His research focuses on understanding how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) interfere with molecular pathways that regulate energy metabolism and cellular differentiation, particularly in the context of metabolic diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes. His central investigation revolves around how metabolic disruptors operate within transcriptional and epigenetic regulatory networks, influencing gene expression and ultimately shaping various phenotypical outcomes. Dr. Kamstra is especially interested in studying the role of epigenetic reprogramming in mediating long-lasting transgenerational effects of EDCs. His team employs innovative in vitro models and new approach methodologies (NAMs) to assess the effects of chemical stressors on metabolic functions and to standardize risk assessment practices for EDCs. Current research themes include the influence of EDCs on fatty liver disease, the effects of BPA alternatives on adiposity and adipogenesis, as well as the impacts of PFAS on the pancreas and its interaction with PPAR gamma. In addition, his team is actively contributing to the development and application of animal-free approaches for chemical safety assessment and the promotion of NAMs across regulatory frameworks.
