Jorn Coers is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University. His research focuses on infectious diseases, which are significant causes of morbidity and mortality both in the United States and worldwide. The Coers Lab seeks to understand fundamental aspects of the immune response to microbes and the corresponding immune evasion strategies evolved by human pathogens. By defining human immunity and the microbial counter-immunity pathways at the molecular level, his lab aims to provide roadmaps for the rational design of novel antimicrobial therapies and the improvement of vaccine strategies against pathogens such as enteric bacterial Shigella and sexually transmitted Chlamydia. In addition to advancing knowledge in immunity, inflammation, and microbial pathogenesis, Coers is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists in an environment that prioritizes research excellence, integrity, learning, teamwork, mutual respect, openness, and collaboration.
