Biography

Jorn Lakowski is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, focusing on retinal disease modeling and development. His research specializes in understanding the molecular pathways and players involved in photoreceptor and ganglion cell development. Leveraging human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal organoid systems and CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing tools, he models retinal development and disease at a cellular level. His current work aims to establish high-throughput assay platforms for basic biology and translational medicine, with insights contributing to improving donor cell production strategies for retinal cell therapy and exploring retinal pathophysiology to discover novel pharmaceutical compounds for treating blinding conditions such as cone dystrophy and glaucoma. His ongoing research includes investigating the role of GNGT2 in GPCR signaling related to cone development and modeling retinitis pigmentosa-associated cone photoreceptor death using stem cell-derived organoids. He has also been involved in various research projects and has delivered key presentations at conferences relevant to his field.
