Jos van der Tol is an Associate Professor in the Photonic Integration group at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His research focuses on opto-electronic integration, polarization issues, photonic membranes, and photonic crystals, with the goal of developing advanced technologies applicable to fields such as telecommunications and data communications. He is particularly interested in the upscaling of photonic integrated chips and the integration of electronic functionality into photonic integrated circuits (ICs), which enables energy-efficient, high-frequency solutions essential for telecom and datacom applications. Van der Tol leads the European project WIPE, which aims to closely integrate BiCMOS electronics with photonic circuits built on indium phosphide, thus achieving high-speed transceivers. He has authored or co-authored over 200 publications in integrated optics and optical networks and holds 26 patent applications. His research is fulfilling, combining intellectual challenges and contributing to the future of technology, while the environment at TU/e adds to the richness of interaction with bright young minds.
