Jos V.M. Welie studied medical sciences law at Maastricht University and philosophy at Radboud University of Nijmegen, Netherlands. A Fulbright grant allowed him to join Loyola University of Chicago's Department of Medical Humanities. He subsequently specialized in medical ethics, obtaining his doctorate in the field at Radboud University. In addition to teaching medical ethics, Dr. Welie is a professor at the Graduate School of Dentistry, Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry. He served as the Founding Secretary of the International Dental Ethics Law Society and was a visiting professor at Gregorian University in Rome, Italy, during the academic year 2005-06. Dr. Welie has co-authored or edited more than 180 publications, including eight books. His recent works include “Death Medical Power: Ethical Analysis of Dutch Euthanasia Practice” published by Open University Press in 2005 and “Justice in Oral Health Care: Ethical Educational Perspectives” by Marquette University Press in 2006. His areas of expertise include ethics in end-of-life care, health law ethics, dental ethics, Catholic health care ethics, Jesuit health sciences education, and philosophical medical anthropology.
