José Borghans leads an interdisciplinary research group focusing on the quantification of leukocyte dynamics. He is a trained theoretical immunologist from Utrecht University and obtained his PhD in 2000, studying lymphocyte MHC diversity. After completing his PhD, he transitioned to experimental immunology laboratories, with the aim of bridging the gap between wet lab experiments and mathematical modeling. He received a Marie-Curie Fellowship and worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, focusing on lymphocyte homeostasis. During his postdoctoral period, he was funded by the NWO Veni grant and worked at Sanquin Research in Amsterdam, studying lymphocyte dynamics in HIV infection. He has been with UMC Utrecht since 2004 and has received funding through NWO grants. He was appointed as Associate Professor in 2009 and became a Full Professor of Quantitative Immunology in 2021. His research aims to comprehensively understand, monitor, and target immune-mediated inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmune disorders. He intends to unravel immune dysregulation that leads to enduring disease modification. Additionally, his group focuses on obtaining quantitative insights into leukocyte dynamics, including their production, loss, and migration, to interpret complex datasets generated by immunologists.
