Biography

José Estrada's research focuses on early-modern Spanish literature, particularly theater, and the emerging transatlantic societal encounter between Europe and the Americas. His studies revolve around Juan Ruiz de Alarcón (1580?-1639), and he interprets the form of theater as a means of self-fashioning. Estrada examines how Ruiz de Alarcón's background in New Spain, coupled with his travels to Spain, grants a privileged position for analysis through a transatlantic lens. In the early-modern period, he studies the cultural and linguistic exchanges between the cultures of Colonial Mexico. Currently, his research is centered on don Bartolomé de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl’s Nahuatl translations of Spanish Baroque theater from the early 1640s. His work analyzes the role the American continent played in crucial debates and developments of the Early Modern period, utilizing performance and language to build identities within the emerging global society.
