José Evangelista became a professor at the University of Montreal in 1979. Over a generation of composers, he established courses that profoundly renewed the teaching at the Faculty of Music. An internationally renowned composer, his musical approach focuses exclusively on melody. He produces works for both orchestras and small ensembles, as well as for keyboards, employing a heterophonic writing style where the melodic line creates an illusion of polyphony by engendering echoes of itself. With Spanish origins, Evangelista's music incorporates influences from gamelan, Western avant-garde, and modal music. A laureate of several awards, including third place in the Shanghai Composition Competition in 2009, his works are performed across Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia. He served as a resident composer at the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal between 1993 and 1995, and recently wrote two operas, 'Exercises de conversation' and 'Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse', produced in Lyon in 2000 and in Montreal in 2001.
