Biography

Jose Nathan Kutz is the Boeing Professor of AI and Data-Driven Engineering at the University of Washington in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. He earned his B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Washington in 1990 and later obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Northwestern University in 1994. After completing postdoctoral fellowships at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota and Princeton University, Kutz joined the faculty at the University of Washington, where he has served as Chair of the Applied Mathematics department from 2007 to 2015. His research focuses on data science, machine learning, scientific computing, dynamical systems, optical atomic physics, computational neuroscience, and fluid dynamics, contributing significantly to these fields through his work and mentorship.
