Biography

José Carlos Marques is an Associate Professor at the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa. His research program lies at the intersection of strategic management, sustainability, and transnational governance, focusing on the drivers and organizational strategies that enhance the effectiveness of inter-organizational coalitions in addressing social and environmental challenges. He has a particular interest in business associations and multi-stakeholder initiatives (MSIs) as well as business-state interactions. Marques's work has been published in leading academic journals including the MIT Sloan Management Review, Organization Studies, and the Journal of Business Ethics. He co-edited the book titled 'Corporate Social Responsibility and Regulatory Governance: Inclusive Development?' which was re-issued by Palgrave Macmillan. His research has garnered several awards, including paper awards from the Academy of Management and recognition for the Governor General's Gold Medal Award nomination from McGill University. He holds an MSc in Development Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a PhD in Management from McGill University. Throughout his career, he has also worked as a Research Analyst at the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development in Geneva and held strategic consulting positions in Montreal, São Paulo, and London. Marques is a member of multiple academic associations such as the Academy of Management and the International Studies Association.
