Biography

José del R. Millán is a Professor and holds the Linda Steen Norris & Lee Norris Endowed Chair in Neuroengineering at the Chandra Family Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He is also a Professor at the Department of Neurology at Dell Medical School, with courtesy appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and is a faculty member at the Mulva Clinic for the Neurosciences. Millán co-directs the UT CARE Initiative and has a distinguished background with contributions in brain-machine interfaces (BMI), particularly utilizing electroencephalogram signals for the design of brain-controlled robotics. His prior experience includes being a research scientist at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and a senior researcher at the Idiap Research Institute in Switzerland. He has held visiting scholar positions at the University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, and the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley. Millán has received numerous accolades for his pioneering work, including the IEEE-SMC Norbert Wiener Award in 2011 and was elevated to IEEE Fellow in 2017. He was elected as a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Biological Engineering in 2020. His research focuses not only on the fundamentals of BMI but also on translating BMI technologies to assist individuals with motor and cognitive disabilities, as well as enhancing capabilities in able-bodied people.
