Biography

José del R. Millán is a Professor and holds the Linda Steen Norris & Lee Norris Endowed Chair in Neuroengineering at the Chandra Family Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, he is a Professor in the Department of Neurology at Dell Medical School and holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He is a member of the Institute of Neuroscience and serves as co-director of the UT CARE Initiative and associate director of related projects. Dr. Millán completed his PhD in computer science at the Technical University of Catalonia in Barcelona in 1992. He has previously worked as a research scientist at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy, and as a senior researcher at the Idiap Research Institute in Martigny, Switzerland. His academic contributions include holding the Defitech Foundation Chair in Brain-Machine Interface at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, where he helped establish the Center for Neuroprosthetics. His research focuses primarily on brain-machine interfaces (BMI) that utilize electroencephalogram signals, designing brain-controlled robots, and translating BMI technology to assist individuals with motor and cognitive disabilities. He has received several accolades for his work, including the IEEE-SMC Norbert Wiener Award in 2011 and becoming an IEEE Fellow in 2017.
