Biography

Dr. Jose Suarez is an Associate Professor in the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego. His research is primarily focused on the environmental determinants of child and adult health, particularly within vulnerable populations. He is the Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded ESPINA study, investigating the health impacts of pesticide exposure in children and adolescents in Pedro Moncayo, Ecuador. Since its initiation in 2008, the study has examined various health aspects, including neurobehavioral and mental health, endocrine function, inflammation, and respiratory health. Dr. Suarez also leads the NO-POPs trial, which assesses dietary interventions for the reduction of persistent organic pollutants in older adults in San Diego. He holds a position on the California Scientific Guidance Panel for the California Environmental Contaminant Biomonitoring Program. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his contributions to the field through various awards, including the Outstanding Service Mentor award from the JPB Foundation/Harvard University. His work notably addresses the intersection of environmental exposures and public health outcomes, aiming to improve health standards in agricultural communities.
