Biography

Professor José L. Torero heads the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at University College London, specializing in fire safety, combustion, environmental remediation, and sanitation. His work focuses on complex environments, particularly in developing nations and urban settings, addressing challenges in novel architectures and critical infrastructure. Torero has been influential in landmark designs, including the tallest timber office building in the world and Space Shuttle hangars at Cape Canaveral. He played a role in the investigation of the World Trade Center collapse and is involved in various human rights and safety investigations. His academic credentials include a BSc from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, an MSc, and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. He has also received an honorary doctorate from Ghent University. Torero is a Chartered Engineer in the UK and a Registered Professional Engineer in Queensland, Australia. He has held numerous prestigious positions, including the Landolt & Cia Chair at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and Professor of Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, demonstrating a robust commitment to improving engineering education and practices.
