Biography

José Pablo Vázquez-Medina is an associate professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at UC Berkeley. He studies the mechanisms of adaptation of marine vertebrates to natural and anthropogenic stressors, particularly the role of oxidative stress and redox signaling in pre-clinical models of disease at molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. His research group aims to understand the physiological mechanisms that drive extreme adaptations in marine vertebrates, with significant contributions to redox biology and the progression of diseases. Current projects include investigations into the physiological consequences of chronic stress exposure in marine mammals, the cellular mechanisms underlying the diving response, and the regulation of antioxidant protein peroxiredoxin 6. His expertise and research interests focus on marine mammals and pre-clinical models of disease.
