Biography

Rafael is a lecturer in Urban Analytics within the Division of Urban Studies and Social Policy. His work centers on the examination of potential applications of emerging forms of data and innovative methodologies to address urban mobility and transport research questions. He is particularly interested in the interactions between spatial dynamics, urban economy, and social equity. Rafael contributes to teaching in Urban Analytics and Urban Transport programmes and is a member of the Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC), collaborating on data service development and curation of datasets. His practical experience spans work with governmental transport agencies and local authorities in Mexico from 2011 to 2018, where he was involved in designing and implementing transport policies informed by academic research. This blend of practice and scholarship bridges theoretical insights and real-world applications, motivating collaborations that extend academic boundaries. He obtained his PhD in 2023 from the University of Glasgow in 2022, with a thesis titled "Revisiting Capitalisation of Public Transport on Residential Land Value: An Empirical Analysis Drawing on Open Science." He also holds a master's degree in Urban Management and Development from Erasmus University Rotterdam.
