Biography

Joseph Banks graduated from the University of Southampton in 2009 with a First-Class degree in Ship Science (Yacht and Small Craft). He is keen sailor and combines his passion for yachts with a technical curiosity to improve performance. He continued his studies with a PhD, working with British Swimming and UK Sport to build up to the London 2012 Olympic Games. His work developed experimental tools for coaches and athletes to use in pool environments and included numerical simulations investigating the resistance components of swimmers. Banks has worked as a research fellow developing experimental methods to assess the performance of passive and adaptive composite structures. He continues to collaborate closely with elite sports as part of the University’s research partnership with the UK Sports Institute. His research primarily focuses on the fluid dynamics associated with resistance and propulsion of ships, yachts, and athletes' equipment, including swimming, sailing, and rowing.
