Biography

Joseph Bliss is a neonatologist with a special interest in fungal infections in premature infants. He completed his BA in Biology at Ithaca College in 1990 and earned his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Rochester in 1998. Following his residency and fellowship training, he joined the faculty at Brown University in 2003. Dr. Bliss conducts clinical work and research focused on host-defense mechanisms against fungal infections, particularly Candida, in premature infants. His research aims to identify unique mechanisms that enhance the susceptibility of infants to infections and to develop strategies to improve their immune function. His laboratory studies the interactions between the fungal pathogen Candida and newborn hosts, particularly neonates who are at high risk for serious infections due to their immature immune systems. Dr. Bliss has received multiple grants for his research, including from the NICHD and NIGMS, and has published extensively on topics related to neonatal candidiasis and immune responses.
