Biography

Joseph N. Cappella is the Gerald R. Miller Professor Emeritus at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the effectiveness of textual, visual, and video messages in health and political contexts, exploring how these messages can persuade or undermine audience effectiveness. Cappella has published over 200 articles and book chapters, and co-authored four books in the areas of health communication, political communication, social interaction, nonverbal behavior, media effects, and statistical methods. His work has been supported by various grants from institutions such as the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the National Science Foundation. He has served on editorial boards for 20 journals and has directed 51 doctoral dissertations. A fellow of the International Communication Association and past president of the National Communication Association, Cappella received the B. Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award and the Distinguished Scholar Award.
