Dr. Joseph Daraio earned his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a focus in hydraulics from the University of Iowa in 2009. He received his bachelor’s degree in Forest Environmental Biology from SUNY, College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 1991, and his master’s degrees in Biology (1994), Philosophy (1998), and Environmental Engineering (2002). His primary research interests involve the potential impacts of climate change on stormwater infrastructure, linking hydrology, hydraulics, and ecology through interdisciplinary investigations. Before joining Memorial University, he served as an assistant professor in Water Resources Engineering at Rowan University, New Jersey, from 2012 to 2015, and worked as a postdoctoral research scholar at North Carolina State University with a contract from USGS. Dr. Daraio has developed models to simulate the effects of land-use change and climate variability on watershed hydrology and instream temperature to assess the long-term impacts on aquatic organisms. He has made significant contributions in hydro-ecology and eco-hydraulics, focusing on the integration of hydrodynamic and hydraulic models with biological assessments. Dr. Daraio has published extensively on climate change effects and is currently involved in a Government of Newfoundland and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) funded project aimed at enhancing adaptive capacity and technical training for engineers.
