Dr. Joseph Daraio earned a PhD in civil environmental engineering-hydraulics from the University of Iowa in 2009. He received a bachelor’s degree in forest environmental biology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 1991 and multiple master’s degrees in biology, philosophy, and environmental engineering. His primary research interests focus on the potential impacts of climate change on storm water infrastructure and incorporate interdisciplinary research linking hydrology, hydraulics, and ecology. Before joining Memorial University, he served as an assistant professor of water resources engineering at Rowan University in New Jersey and contributed to research on climate change effects on local water resources. He also completed postdoctoral research at North Carolina State University, where he developed models to simulate the effects of land-use change and climate change on watershed hydrology and instream temperatures. His work involves significant contributions to hydro-ecology and eco-hydraulics model development, methodologies, and the integration of hydrodynamic and hydraulic models with biological models. Moreover, he has engaged in hydraulic engineering projects involving river restoration and dam removal with the Bureau of Reclamation. Currently, he is involved in a project funded by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Natural Resources Canada to build adaptive capacity and provide technical training to professional engineers in the area of climate resilience.
