Biography

Joseph M. DeSimone is the Sanjiv Sam Gambhir Professor of Translational Medicine and a Professor of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University. He also holds courtesy appointments in the Departments of Chemistry, Materials Science Engineering, and Operations, Information Technology at the Graduate School of Business. His research efforts focus on developing innovative interdisciplinary solutions to complex problems through advanced polymer 3D fabrication methods. His lab is pursuing new capabilities in digital 3D printing and the synthesis of new polymers for use in advanced additive technologies. DeSimone's translational medicine research is aimed at exploiting 3D digital fabrication tools for engineering new vaccine platforms, improved drug delivery approaches, and enhanced medical devices, with a current emphasis on pediatrics. In addition to his research, DeSimone's group is exploring topics related to Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation in Manufacturing. Prior to joining Stanford in 2020, he was a professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and held an appointment in Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University. A prominent figure in his field, DeSimone co-founded the additive manufacturing company Carbon and served as its CEO from 2014 to 2019. Over his career, he has published more than 350 scientific articles and is named inventor on 200 issued patents. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Barack Obama in 2016 and has mentored many students throughout his career.
